Windows 98 Annoyances - Errata in the Book
Note that many of the errata on this page have been fixed in subsequent printings (more info), so your book may be correct in most cases.
- Notes for Second Edition users
- The following notes apply if you have Windows 98 Second Edition, or if you've installed Internet Explorer 5.0 (or later) on top of Windows 98:
- IE5 won't substantially affect any of the solutions in Windows 98 Annoyances, although some dialogs or interface elemnts might be slightly changed.
- The update that comes with IE5 does fix some minor bugs (example).
- IE5 adds the ability to customize the Internet Explorer toolbar, although the Windows Explorer toolbar is still hard-coded. All solutions in Chapter 8, Web Integration, still apply.
- You now can rename Start Menu items in-place by right-clicking on them and selecting Rename.
- The Second Edition comes with a new feature, Internet Connection Sharing.
- Figures
- Some of the figures were botched, including Figures 3-2, 5-1, 5-2, 7-1, 7-11, and 7-13. They should still be legible, but some of the lines might not line up properly as they should. Correct versions can be found here.
- Page 65
- Automated backups are made every time you start up your computer as stated, but no more than once a day.
- Page 132
- The command in step 10 should be c:\Windows\Command\PRINTDIR.BAT %1 (same as in the book; just add the %1).
- Page 133
- This solution will not work if another application has taken over the BMP file type.
If this is the case, all you need to do is use the new file type's registry key, as described in Chapter 3.
- Page 136
- The box contains a warning, so the owl icon should be a turkey.
- Page 141
- The value in step 2 should be named ProductKey, not ProductID.
- Page 169
- Under the fourth bulleted item, in the first paragraph, the location of the Temp folder should be changed from c:\temp\ to c:\windows\temp\
- Page 240
- Last line: "backup program not be able" should be changed to "backup program may not be able"
- Page 273
- There are five comments in Example 6-1 and one comment in Example 6-2, each of which start with " . . . " - these should all be italicized.
- Page 275
- Fourth bullet - the semicolon in the last sentence should be a comma.
- Page 306
- One possible cause for the nonfunctional windows update feature is the removal of the Internet icon from the desktop (another bug in Windows 98). However, restoring the Internet icon on the desktop won't necessarilly solve the problem, so the solution in the book is still your best bet.
- Page 313
- Each of the transmit script commands in the example in step 6 should include a ^M as explained in step 4.
- Page 328
- The last sentence of the fourth paragraph should point to Appendix B, not Appendix C.
- Page 357
- The DriveFreeSpace script function won't report the correct free space for hard disks with more than 2 gigabytes of free space. This is a system-wide bug in Windows 98 that affects most programs that try to determine the free space with large disks partitioned with FAT32.
- Page 362
- The fifth line of code should be If Right(, not If Left(.
- Page 373-374
- "using the Window Scripting Host" should read "using the Windows Script Host"
- Appendix A
- Several of the settings were inadvertently and accidentally switched with others (oops). Here's a new Appendix A. (Adobe Acrobat required.)
- Appendix B
- Figure B-1 is wrong for obvious reasons.
- CD Errata
- If your book come without a CD, see this page.
- A few of the long filenames were truncated on the included CD. Here are the correct filenames:
- \Book Examples\Appendix B\TURNTH~1.TXT should be "Turn the Address Bar into a Command Prompt.txt"
- \Book Examples\Chapter 3\AUTOMA~1.TXT should be "Automate the Deletion of Registry Items.txt"
- \Book Examples\Chapter 9\BATCHE~3.TXT should be "Batch Example - multidel.bat.txt"
- \Book Examples\Chapter 9\EXAMPL~1.TXT should be "Example - Command-line Parameters.txt"
- \Book Examples\Chapter 9\GOODIE~1.TXT should be "Goodies - Command-Line Parameters.txt"
- \Book Examples\Chapter 9\GO560F~1.TXT should be "Goodies - Windows and Internet Shortcuts.txt"
- Also there is now an update to the trial version of O'Reilly Utilities avilable here. The update resolves several minor issues with the software on the CD.
