Hi Pat,
55 or 55 degrees is not excessive for a laptop - it's very often normal depending
on which processor.
It maybe (?) that the BIOS has a temperature setting for closedown and this may
be set too low (ie 54) in which case you could reset it to 65. This is quite a common
setting for desktop motherboards - I'm not sure about laptops, you'll just have to
check
