I'm starting to think that IE8 has some problem with Windows Update as supported by your much better results with IE6.

Last night quite late I started Windows update using IE8 and it took at least 20 minutes to identify the required updates.  I believe the latest Tuesday updates were available and it's possible that many users were updating.

Interestingly, the activity light on my disk was on pretty much continuously for the 20 minutes.  In addition, my Task Manager showed Internet Explorer consuming 33% of CPU bandwidth, and SVCHost.exe was using substantial memory somewhere around 140 MB as I recall.

You really wonder what is going on with all that activity.
