Thanks for the help.  I did download and take an initial look at Dial-A-Fix.  It's not clear that it supports IE8, and I've also seen warnings that it can make some problems worse.

Now that I think about it, manually running Windows Update always took 5-10 minutes or more to scan my computer and determine if any updates are needed.

For those doing Windows Update manually using IE6-IE8, how long does it take to come up with the screen showing the updates that apply?  At that point I believe one then clicks on Express Install or Custom Install.

Actually installing the updates can also be lengthy but I am talking only about the first step in determining which updates are needed.
