RAM reading varies between motherboards and the
OS used. they don't always read the exact value. different chipsets, memory controllers
made by different manufacturers produce varying results.
the labeled sizes when you buy RAM are only rough
estimates, merely a marketing ploy to not confuse customers because of the reasons
already stated in the first paragraph.
the only simple way to know is through physical
hardware testing.
for as long as the RAM (memory type/class and clock
frequency) is compatible with the motherboard (especially those after the duron and
early pentium days), there is no harm in inserting more memory than the board can
support, assuming the PSU can still supply enough for the additional hardware baggage.
but the system will still work with the max RAM capacity but the excess is automatically
disregarded, as if in idle.
