Backup actrivation from unbootable installation

Hello,
I am working on a Vista laptop which has suffered the KSOD (Black Screen of Death)
problem. I have tried various fixes and cannot seem to find any way to repair the
install, so I'm going to go with a full reinstall.
But, I wish to backup the Vista activation prior to doing this, so that I can re-activate
it after reinstallation. There is a tool out there that backs up your certificate
and gets the product key, but the problem with this is that it requires the OS to
be booted because it runs within the install you're trying to backup the activation
for.
I can boot Linux or a BartPE disc on the laptop - that is, I can access any of its
data. I can access its registry files using REGEDT32. But, I don't know if it is
possible/how to backup the activation manually from the installation.
Does anyone have any advice or tips on how this can be accomplished?
Thanks
fm

Isn't there a recovery partition?Laptop installs unless done with a separate oem
disc won't need activation. What are the circumstances here?

YES indeed look to your manufacturer for instructions on doing that. Usually F11
on startup. There are a few variations, but it works very well and seamless.

No recovery partition on the drive. The owner lost the packet shipped with the unit,
so therefore if there was a recovery CD in there, it's gone now. Under XP you could
just backup wpa.dbl and you'd be set, there were also tools to rip the 25-char product
key out of the registry even if it was offline, but I know Vista does it entirely
differently...

Most of the laptops have a recovery partition on the hard drive already you don't
need the "packet" as Charlie said check the boot screen for like he said press F11
for recovery or similar.
