Check with Dell also. Sometimes a BIOS update was needed for issues for battery
handling but I doubt this is the case here. This happens in my experience if the
battery has been "short cycled" (not discharging all the way before charging) or
has been constantly running under more heat, such as when the machine is laying flat
on a surface and can not dissipate the heat. Lithium batteries are not supposed
to suffer as much with shortened life by short cycling, but my experience says otherwise.
The battery might seem to still be giving you the same amount of run time, but when
the battery error begins to flash, your battery is slowly losing capacity, has been
overheating etc. There is actually a chip inside that monitors running conditions,
capacity etc. When presets are "tripped" it sends a signals to the BIOS and you
see the LED's start to flash the error code.
I always completely discharge a battery before charging and make sure the bottom
of the machine is elevated. Those cool pads work too. The batteries in mine lasted
three years before the battery indicator started flashing.. That's about 200% more
time than most which are about one to a one and a half years normal expectancy.
