Creating 'factory settings' disc for Vista laptop

The last snapshot I took of our Acer laptops hard drive was about 4 years ago, principally because I had hoped that by not doing so I would save disc space. Anyway I am about to move the HD partitions to make more of the disc usable instaed of half of it being reserved for backup snapshots.

What I want to know is can I make a restore disc/factory settings disc for the laptop (maybe on an external HD) so I don't have to use any laptop HD at all.

Freeware would be nice, any suggestions?
