Well, through a lot of trial and error, plus one BSOD during one try, I figured
out how to fix this.
I had to end up deleting the Display Adapter entry completely from the Device
Manager list and let Windows reinstall it upon the next boot-up. It found the correct
drivers internally which happily were the most current. I could then go to the Monitors
entry and update it to the proper driver.
Microsoft's support forum's advice to change the driver for the Display Adapter
to the basic VGA driver didn't work: it caused the Monitors entry to reappear temporarily,
but when I tried to change the Monitors driver to the correct one, the Monitors entry
in Device Manger disappeared again upon the next reboot.
So, in short, the drivers for the Display Adapter were corrupted and required
complete removal and auto-reinstallation.
