Monitor Missing in Device Manager

System is an HP desktop running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Monitor is an HP w1907.
The owner recently wiped the system and restored it back to factory settings due
to a virus infection. I was called to take a look at it because several things were
not right afterwards.
I noticed that the Monitor is not showing in device manager, but the display adapter
is. Attempts to install the monitor's driver fail because because the monitor is
apparently not defined to the system.
The monitor is working, albeit in a degraded mode due to PnP, but "Monitor" should
appear in the device manager list, at least as PnP, but nothing's there.
I did quite a lot of research and the best thing I could find was to change the
/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath registry
key to %SystemRoot%\System32 to attempt to force recognition of the device at startup.
Didn't help.
Any suggestions what I might try to get it into the list so I can install the
proper drivers?
Thanks.
