Can't Delete 0-Byte Desktop Icons

I have some icons on my desktop that contain no data (0 bytes) and I can't delete
them because when I do it says "Can not find item. This item is no longer located
in ... /Desktop."
Basically the icons are files that were deleted months ago, but for some reason an
icon has remained, and since it was already deleted the computer can't find it when
I try to delete it. Likewise, they can't be moved, or renamed, or modified.
I tried to save a .txt file with the same name as the icon, and then when I deleted
the text file, both the text file and the icon disappeared, but the icon always comes
back whenever the desktop is refreshed.
There are like nine of them sitting on my desktop.
