Thanks for your reply.  I just now got the thing figured out.  It turns out that 
the netgear adapter was malfunctioning.  After numerous problems trying to install 
the driver for our old linksys wireless adapter, I managed to install it.  I ended 
up getting a long cable to connect the computer directly to the internet and when 
installing it, could go online for an updated driver.  That fixed it!
