Corrupted file and startup problem

Yesterday I tried to access a file (with photos in it). I received the message that
the file was corrupt and could not be opened. Don't remember the exact sequence
the the check disk function started, and after about ten minutes of going through
all the various tasks, the file became accessible and the photos were still there.
Then today I came home from work, and when I tried to turn on the computer the screen
came up with a message that there was problem with startup, and the startup fix program
started running. After two attempts it finally started. I did not add any hardward
or load any programs of late....Not feeling comfortable with the PC right now. Any
idea of what might have caused this?
