Browsers Question

I have been having difficuties with my Mozilla Firefox
brower lately. I will no longer be allowed to view videos
previoulsy allowed by this browser. Also, I have noticed
the slowness in browsing and opening windows. I would
like someone to recommend a browser that I may use
and remove my Firefox. I am not a savvy user and will
thank you in advance for any advise.

Many Web sites are phasing out support for old Browsers like IE6 and Firefox 2. Since
you are using Windows ME you are limited to what Browser to use now. Opera is suppose
to still support older versions of Windows, and be somewhat more compliant to
the Web.

Thanks as usual Steve. Actually I had been readin a
bit on Opera and I think I will give it a try. You are
correct on the phasing out support for old Browsers
like I have used on my old machine. I will get on the
Opera browser today. Thanks again

Your question seems to contain an implied reference to YouTube, a site which has
been making a nuisance of itself lately by threatening to withdraw support for older
browsers.
From examining the latest statements on that site, its intention appears to be merely
to introduce new forms of advertising - of benefit only to itself, not to users -
which I'm sure we can well live without.
Specifically, they are now saying explicitly that it will remain possible to view
videos on their site using any browser. This is a old tactic, long abused by Micro$oft
in its campaign against Windows 9x users, of pretending that the sky will fall unless
you obey their demands.
I've noticed that Firefox 2 is quite effective on the YouTube site, much more so
than Internet Explorer 6. So I always use Firefox 2 there now: it doesn't get nearly
the same level of abuse from the site that they hurl at Internet Explorer 6.
However, Firefox 3 will run on Windows ME (whereas Internet Explorer 7 won't).
If you install the kernel extender (KernelEx.exe), to add certain functions that
are commonly used by Windows XP, Firefox 3 and quite a variety of other WinXP programs
will happily run on a Windows ME system.
In this respect, WinME has some advantages over Windows 98, because the higher powered
hardware of WinME seems to handle the WinXP software a little more easily.

Ed, thank you for the interesting information with
respect to browsers. As I wrote earlier that I was
having difficulties viewing videos with firefox, I
switched to Opera and I still cannot view most of
the videos posted by bloggers on my favorites web
sites. When I go to the video, it has the loading
circle going round and round but the video never
shows. While your recommendation with respect
to downloading a Kernel Extender to give my WinMe more power, I must tell you that
I am now
becoming accustomed to my new Opera browser
and would find it inconvenient to switch again so
soon. Sometimes I get lucky though with videos. It
is when they appear on screen with the spot to click
and it opens. Other than that, I thank you for your
advise. As to the Kernel, as good as it sounds, I
wonder if it works for Opera also. Feel free to give
your opinion, it is greatly respected.
Thanks

Some of your problems with watching Video on the Internet may also be because new
versions of Flash Player may be needed. The new versions may not be compatible with
Windows ME, Windows 98.

Steve you are absolutely correct about the flash
player not being compatible with my WinMe if
I would want to install the new version. I have
given up trying. Thanks as always.

In fact the latest flash videos will play in Windows ME.
Version 9.0.262.0 is the latest version of Flash Player 9 for Windows 98 and ME,
Macintosh, and Linux.
You simply need to choose the Flash plug-in for the type of browser which you prefer
to use. There are now compatible browser plug-ins for not only Internet Explorer
and Firefox, but also for other browsers.
If you go to the following Adobe page, it gives you various different downloads (compatible
with Windows 9x, Mac OS X, and all versions of Linux) depending on which browser
you want to view Flash videos in: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406791.html
Otherwise, view Flash video files without using a browser, by downloading the .FLV
file and playing it from your hard disk. I can recommend the following players for
Windows 98SE and ME -
Media Player Classic v6.4.9.1 (MPLAYERC.EXE):
Download Media Player Classic here
Applian FLV Player v2.0.25 (FLVPlayer.exe):
Download Applian FLV Player here
Wimpy FLV Player v2.5.0.21:
Download Wimpy FLV Player here
GOM Player v2.1.21.4846 (GOM.exe) (my personal favourite):
Download Gom Player here

I'm so sorry: I was in a hurry last time, and in consequence I unintentionally overlooked
one part of your question.
If you install the Kernel Extender (KernelEx.exe) in Windows ME it will *not* prevent
you running any of your existing programs, such as your favorite Opera browser.
The Kernel Extender allows you to run additional programs, that were intended for
Windows XP. It will run just about any program that will run on Windows XP, because
it adds to Windows ME the ability to interpret certain functions (technically, function
calls used by the Windows kernel) that exist in Win XP but don't exist in Win ME.
It extends the capability of Windows ME, by extending the type of function calls
which it can understand. It doesn't lose the ability to understand Windows ME functions;
but it does get the ability to handle a whole bunch of extra functions found in Windows
XP programs.
Sometimes Windows ME programs don't like this.
If that happens, you just add the Windows ME program in question to a list of programs
(stored in the Windows registry) that the kernel extender will ignore. It then doesn't
allow that program to interact with the new settings, and it functions as an ordinary
Windows ME program.
More information about the Kernel Extender is at: http://x86.neostrada.pl/KernelEx/

There are some plugins that help with video's embeded in pages, in firefox just
goto the firefox add-ons page, search for flash and you will finds some.
Also a plugin you should get is the enable disable java and javascript toolbar
buttons, keep java off unless you have to turn it on for a spacific page, then turn
it back off.
One thing that got me once, is some pages force flash to upgrade, even when you
have upgrade turned off in firefox and the flash player, the newest flash versions
will not work in WinMe/95/98.
if you goto:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html
you can download the older version again, then uninstall the newer flash, and
reinstall and old version, I personaly like the ones before 9 as there is a flash
trojan web page installer that infects versions of flash past version 9.
one weirdness with u-tube is some links work in old flash some don't you can almost
always get the vid you want to view by doing it in a differant way, such as searching,
etc.
Also the flash download and u-tube video download plugins help to by pass u-tube
problems.
As do things like spoofing the browser version, etc. More plug-ins :-)
I love plugins, oh make sure to use advanced options on firefox plugins page and
select show versions for your firefox version.

Hello Just Me. Thanks for your well articulated advise pertaining to my browser
question posted in February. I was told by another of the helpful members here at
Annoyances to download the older version of plug-in which I did. I am now able to
view videos and do not have difficulties with my PC.
Thank you for your nice post and I will take the opportunity to allow you to assist
me in another matter. However, I will ask you to read my new post that I will write
following sending you this one.
Look for a post by me entitled: "Need free virus scan". I hope you know of one.
Thanks, Elmoticky

The browser plug-in for Flash Player 9 is the newest that will work in Windows
98/98SE/ME.
The latest version that can run on Windows 98/98SE/ME is version
260 (Flash Player 9.0 release 260). I hear there are now later versions than this
for running on Windows 98/98SE/ME, but I haven't yet tested any of them.
The plug-in for Internet Explorer won't work in Netscape-based browsers (such as Firefox),
and vice versa. Hence there are two different plug-ins.
Don't download
the one for Firefox and expect it to work in Internet Explorer! But if you happen
to have both IE6 and Firefox 2 installed, you can safely install both Flash plug-ins:
they don't conflict.
The page from which to download the plugin you need
is http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406791.html
If you install the plug-in for Internet Explorer, it will install an ActiveX
file named Flash9j.ocx (usually into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Macromed\Flash).
If you run into any problem, the secret is to uninstall your current Flash plug-in
first, using the special Flash uninstaller program available from Adobe's website,
before installing the version obtained from the above link.
Historical note: The Flash software was originally owned by Macromedia,
but they have since sold it to Adobe.

There is no unicode plugin for Windows 98 or ME.
The Microsoft Layer
for Unicode is available, however. This constitutes a single .DLL file named UNICOWS.DLL
which must be copied to the directory ("folder") containing the .exe program that
needs it. It does not need installing, and does not add any entries to the Windows
registry.
This .DLL cannot be used on a system-wide basis, so there is
no point copying it to the C:\WINDOWS directory or any other location in your DOS
path.
It provides some unicode functions, but only for .exe files in the
same directory as itself. It is intentionally designed NOT to function as a plugin
for Windows, because it interferes with (and will crash) many programs which run
under Windows 9x but cannot cope with unicode.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/magazine/cc301794.aspx
The Kernel extender (KernelEx) is a replacement for the Windows ME
system file Kernel32.dll and enables Windows to install and run NTx-only & XP-only
applications and games.
It can be downloaded from the KernelEx homepage:
http://x86.neostrada.pl/KernelEx/
