Invalid keyboard code specified

"Invalid keyboard code specified" has been appearing in my bootscreen recently. The system seems to work no worse than before, but I'd like to be rid of that 'mention'. I have looked in BIOS and there does not seem to be reference to keyboard there which I might edit.

So you suggest I should try a different keyboard. I can do that, although this one works perfectly.

Well, if it's producing the error message, then I'd say it's NOT working perfectly.

I have tried other keyboards - the message persists.

I have never seen such a setting in BIOS, but will look at next opportunity.

Hi Sebastian,

I know your message is a week old, and maybe you've solved it already, but without knowing the exact nature of the problem, I would think your error message refers to the fact that something or someone has reset the keyboard Code Page to a value which the system doesn't recognise.

The default value for DOS/Win9x is Code Page 437.

Given various combinations of old operating systems and new software, or new operating systems and old software, various error messages can arise.

From my very rusty memory, I seem to recall that you can reset the Code Page by opening the DOS prompt and typing "cp=437", or something very similar (without the quotes, of course). You could Google it to confirm. Try it and see if it makes a difference.

Under Windows ME, the keyboard is configured by settings in the [keyboard] section of the file SYSTEM.INI (located in the C:\WINDOWS directory), which specifies the name and location of the driver file needed by the system.

That section will say something like this -

[keyboard]
keyboard.dll=
oemansi.bin=xlat437.bin
subtype=
type=4

Check your SYSTEM.INI file. From your description of the problem, the chances are there is a mis-match between the details in the [keyboard] section in it and the actual driver file that's on your disk.

Perhaps the file refered to by the section is missing from the folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM ? Copying it back to there (e.g. from a .CAB file in C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS) would maybe cure the problem.

Thank you Ed. I will follow this up for interest, but it is now of 'academic interest' only, as the error message disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared !
