Although your problem seems to be more or less resolved, I think I'll just mention
one useful (and free) program that will run on Windows 9x, for the sake of completeness,
as no one else has yet mentioned it here.
This is McAfee Stinger. It still
runs on Win98/ME -

Stinger is a stand-alone utility, not an on-line scanner.
Use
it to detect and remove specific viruses. It's not a substitute for full anti-virus
protection, but a tool to assist a user in dealing with an infected system.
