The browser plug-in for Flash Player 9 is the newest that will work in Windows
98/98SE/ME.
The latest version that can run on Windows 98/98SE/ME is version
260 (Flash Player 9.0 release 260). I hear there are now later versions than this
for running on Windows 98/98SE/ME, but I haven't yet tested any of them.
The plug-in for Internet Explorer won't work in Netscape-based browsers (such as Firefox),
and vice versa. Hence there are two different plug-ins.
Don't download
the one for Firefox and expect it to work in Internet Explorer! But if you happen
to have both IE6 and Firefox 2 installed, you can safely install both Flash plug-ins:
they don't conflict.
The page from which to download the plugin you need
is http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406791.html
If you install the plug-in for Internet Explorer, it will install an ActiveX
file named Flash9j.ocx (usually into C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Macromed\Flash).
If you run into any problem, the secret is to uninstall your current Flash plug-in
first, using the special Flash uninstaller program available from Adobe's website,
before installing the version obtained from the above link.
Historical note: The Flash software was originally owned by Macromedia,
but they have since sold it to Adobe.
