I should have been a little more clear on the virus checkers.
I'm not advocating running two or more virus checkers simulataniously, just use
at least a couple of them, if your going to run a full time virus checker then yes
only one should be active, but you should still shut off the full time one here and
there and check your system with another virus checker just to be safe.
You can just turn off the loading of your full time virus checker by running msconfig
and shutting off the running of its files.
I would also disconect from the internet or any local network while checking over
your system.
Actualy depending on system config, some versions of Autoruns and ProcessExplorers
(after System Internals was taken over by Microsoft) won't work on WinMe even though
Microsoft claims they will. People will just have to try versions till they find
which one works in their config. I have two WinMe boxes and one will run one version,
but the other system requires an older version.
I don't advocate people get too dependant on any aplication, especially a virus
checker or other program to find things on a persons computer that they don't want
there, there are so many differant types of virus, trojans, keylogers, adware, etc.,
etc., etc., that one program is just not able to find all the differant permutations,
also a limited or new bug maybe in one app but not on another app, plus one program
may have a holistic inspection that finds the bug that others don't.
Besides the other problem is hackers find what virus scanners, firewals, etc.,
people are using and find ways to infect the virus scanner, etc., or work around
it, so one app mite be infected by a virus and be disabled while another may not.
As with all computer related things there is no true expert, no one can know everything,
and its the same with proramers who write anti-virus, anti-trojan, anti-adware, etc.
something is going to slip by, no matter how good the programer, or even team of
programers is.
I never say my views are the end all be all and I don't respect those who think
that their views are and you shouldn't either, thats why I recomend using products
from several places.
You wouldn't by a car with out looking at other ones and you shouldn't use one
program with out looking at others.
Anyway if you think something I mention can help, great, if not, well then "ignore
the person behind the curtain".
