This reinforces my suspicions re: your HDD's condition.
Think of that as a roulette wheel where most of the slots are red
but when you land on any of the few black slots, the croupier gets your whole stack.

I'm assuming from Safe Mode. Marking the bad sectors
should keep you from tripping over the same old wrinkle in the carpet for some time.
