No, I haven't. I just moved so most of my stuff is out in the garage, in boxes,
including probably one or two Windows 98 CD's and old keyboards etc.
It's letting me run scandisk now without crashing, so I will finish that, and
then disk defragmenter, and see if that helps.Unless someone else suggests something
that can help in the meantime.
If not, I will probably have it fixed. I'd rather pay someone to fix it then have
to wait until I go through all those boxes (there are literally hundreds, and no
a/c in the garage). Right now I am going through the many boxes in our dining room,
and after THAT I will tackle the garage, but it's going to be a while. I called a
repair place and it doesn't sound like it will cost all that much to fix (less than
$150) if it's just the video driver or windows corruption. Of course, if they have
to fix or replace a hard drive or motherboard, that will cost more. I'll cross that
bridge when I come to it.
I kind of need it fixed asap because I use the ATI to make daily transcripts of
the soaps for my website at http://tvmegasite.net I have some people to do backup
but...would rather not have them have to keep doing it for months. So, paying someone
to fix it, if I have to, will be faster than having to dig through the hundreds of
boxes in the garage! And, no, I'm not exaggerating, when we moved there were 400
boxes.... :)
I know everyone thinks, oh, ten years, that's so old, but honestly I have had
computers since the 80's and hardly ever had one die on me completely. They can usually
be fixed, or upgraded. I never understood the mindset of just throwing it away and
buying a new one if you can repair it. I still have my old Commodore and it works!
I have recycled a few to friends, but they were working when I did...I have 5 Dells
and they have had very few problems.
