That box deserves a better OS than that.

There are pages full of Windows 98 Product Key numbers out there.
All you have to do is Google using the proper phrase.
Any help beyond that is against the rules of this forum.

First, if you plan to put this box online or use any removable media with it,
Win9x is the LEAST SECURE operating system around.
M$ declared it dead 4 years ago.
Linux is a MUCH better choice for an Internet-connected computer.
As you note, M$'s backwards compatibility (a traditional strength with Redmond)
has become a low grade of junk.
OTOH, there is also a strong possibility
that you can use your old Windoze-compatible apps under WINE
(in turn, under Linux).
A better Windows than Windoze
If you get Win98 installed (first)[1], you can create a dual-boot box;
Linux will offer to set this up for you.
Again, MUCH more secure than Micros~1's junk.
Your local Linux
Users Group can get you going, again, FREE.
[1] M$ is a total toad when it comes to OSes already installed on a box.
If you try to install a Micros~1's OS *second*, it will screw up the existing OS.
Thanks, Redmond, you bunch of insecure losers.
