I was reminded today of just how alone the (stinky) cheese stands:
from the Usenet Archive:
POSIX Compliance Equates With Choice and Versatility
What is going on there is that Linux (the OS kernel) is (optionally) replaced
and the FreeBSD kernel is seamlessly substituted.
All of the POSIX-compliant
infrastructure and all of the POSIX-compliant apps
(aka "the distro") continues to work as if nothing has changed.
Now, contrast that with Win9x apps that won't even work under XP
and XP apps that won't even work under Win9x.
...not to mention that all that M$-compatible junk constantly gets infected.
This also points to another severe flaw in the Defective By Design M$ OSes:
With Unix-like systems, you ONLY need to reboot when you replace the kernel
(or part of the kernel).
