"There may, however, be good news in sight.
The end of the era of sucky, anti-competitive ISPs may be drawing to a close:
...as opposed to the status quo:"
I was recently blacklisted by AT&T for hanging up on a telemarketer.
Per an agreement with the gov't they were to provide $10/month DSL. First, they hid
it on their website. I was surprised recently to find it was no longer hidden but
right next to the $19.95 for the same service. Their new method of cheating was
to deny it to anyone on the basis that you did not supply a credit card number for
which they provided no box. I called up to say I'd send them a check. I was told
they had a rule against it. The telemarketer girl provided misinformation that the
offer could only be made thru the website and anyway it didn't exist. I was about
to subscribe to their service but said to the woman, "I'm too tired to think." She
said, "There's nothing to think about. I'll do your thinking for you." And I politely
hung up.
After thinking about it, I remembered my current ISP resells AT&T's service. I always
pay them with a yearly check. I have never given a credit card number to an ISP.
I have never given a credit card number to AT&T. So I called and arranged to send
them a check. 5 days later they told me AT&T would not do it. Allegedly DSL cannot
be connected here. In reality the fiber optic cables are 100 ft from my front door,
some neighbors on the block have DSL and even if it was copper wire I am only 1/2
mile from the AT&T's downtown substation. I can only conclude that AT&T has blacklisted
me for hanging up on one of their telemarketers.
From experience in year's past I know that AT&T outsources this service, often to
the most irresponsible people who work on commission. There has been an attempt
to slam me for extra services which was thwarted because they don't have a credit
card number. You shouldn't give credit cards to unreliable companies. Since AT&T
takes no responsibility and gives great power to low ranking employees ...
