The longer your posts get,

the more significant the instructions in the first 2 paragraphs here are:

(The Webmaster didn't do a good job of splainin that.)

Well, if you have always used a wireless connection
between the computer and the cable modem end, obviously not.
From your description, you *should* have the Ethernet cable. See "NIC" (below).

Do you have a power pack / wall wart similar to the picture?
Have you swapped that with the one on the working unit?
Have you swapped the unit itself at the problem system for the working unit?

|The cable modem is in the basement along with the router.

Ed suggested connecting your computer directly to that, which would use
 - a 10BaseT cable (Ethernet; RJ45-to-RJ45; Cat5) from your Network card 8-)
     or
 - a USB cable from a USB port 8-( (assuming the far end even supports that)

I concur.
A crossover cable to another working computer's NIC would also test that.

"crossover" + "simplest network"
I would think an ISP guy would have done something like this, first thing.
This assures that your network stack is not borked
(e.g. the TCP/IP protocol is working).

DNA linked to a page there that I already linked to.
Again, without a **real** Windoze Install Disk (again: thanks, M$)
you're limited in what you can repair short of a scrape-the-HDD-clean session.

|I have a little box at each computer too.
|
...which, I'm guessing is connected via an Ethernet cable to your NIC
(Network Interface Card; Ethernet card)
http://google.com/images?q=RJ45
with each of those devices having an antenna.

If the transmitter is external to your computer, it also won't require a device driver.
The scenario is actually getting simpler.

|those seem to be working...because the new computer is working fine.
|
Well, that would indicate ONE is working. See "swap" (above).

|when I put the router software disk in the computer
|it gives me a setup like the picture link you gave me,
|but the cable people told me that had nothing to do with anything.
|
Well, it's hard to configure/update a router that you're not connecting to.
Yes, that's something separate.
