Reinstalling Windoze is routinely done by many people to get rid of Windoze Rot.
(A phenomenon that other OSes don't experience.)
Reinstalling Windoze from a "Restore" disk **after adding hardware**
now, there I will agree; that can get thorny.
|There are always better solutions.
|
Heh. You wish.
|It means you now need all the driver files for your hardware,
|including your modem,
|as the simplest option now is to try reinstalling the wireless modem.

Yes. I gave this short shrift in my post.
|You will need the *original* dial-up software supplied by your ISP,
|
I didn't see the OP mention dial-up.
Most old hands on this forum will advise AGAINST using those ISP CDs.
The software on them is UNNECESSARY.
It is also almost universally poorly crafted
and usually causes more problems than it solves.
In short, what is on those is generally called crapware--for a reason.
|If you haven't got [a setup disk from your ISP] ask your ISP for it.
|They will send you an installation CD (they almost never supply floppies now).
|But remember to specify that you need a version for Windows 98.
|
You can *ask* for that, but here in the year 2010,
what will be sent to you will likely NOT be for Win98.
As mentioned, those disks are crap anyway.
As an example of how unnecessary they are,
Linux guys get their stuff working all the time without them.
All you **really** need from your ISP is an **IP address** assignment.

...and this is perhaps the best networking site on the Web:

|the wireless modem installation disks that came with the PCI card.
|
Yes to that...and if you don't have that,
you will need to download the W98 device driver from the manufacturer's site.
Good luck finding a W98 driver.
|To the best of my recollection there were no wireless Internet installations
|when Win98 was the latest O/S on the block!
|[...]Windows 98 did not come with native wireless network drivers.
|
Another important point that I neglected in my post.
|The first step is to get an internet connection, by cable,
|to ensure the connection itself works.
|Then try to conect to it using wireless,
|once you've ironed out any problem with the connection.
|
This last point is really good advice;
the fewer variables in the equation, the easier it is to solve.
