It goes beyond that. People need to start doing their homework.
The thing uses Broadcom chips and BROADCOM PROVIDES *LOUSY* SUPPORT.
I was going to suggest booting to a Linux Live CD
and seeing if the hardware was broken but I looked up which chipset it uses
and, again, BROADCOM PROVIDES *LOUSY* SUPPORT--even under Linux
(which has the best out-of-the-box hardware support of any OS).
There's no excuse for (Broadcom's) driver suckiness (particularly under Linux):

BOYCOTT BROADCOM--no matter what OS you run.
It is worth noting that XP, Vista, & Linux each have an Approved Hardware List;
Win9x never did
--and bad habits[1] formed WRT M$ crap in the early years die hard. 8-(
[1] ...like "Windoze-compatible" apps written so that they require root access
--destroying any hope of a secure operating environment. 8-(
