Hi Mark.

In all the years I've been using Win98 I've never had this type of thing happen.

I presume you've done a virus and spyware\malware check?

Nothing to do with your problem but I recommend you use this on any computer Crap 
Cleaner.

While you are there you can have a browse through their forum Piriform, 
and also download Recuva as well. They are both free and very good for cleaning and 
recovering deleted files. It won't find and remove any malware or virus.

I'm sure gewg_ will add a comments and a few links when he comes around.
