Slow File Execution Across Home Network

What is it with Windows 7 home networking that causes .exe files to take ages to open across the network?  What is Windows doing that causes a 2 meg exe to take 50 seconds to execute when run across the network?

Only exes are effected. The problem doesn't seem to be present with other types of files like MS Office files.  I've seen this problem mentioned elsewhere but haven't seen a solution to it. Anyone know the cause and if there's a fix?
