I looked up 2 utilities that can tell you what program is locking a file. There
is good news and bad news. 1st the good news.
They are both Win2K compatible.
Now the bad news.
One of them, Dr.Hoiby's WhoLockMe
, doesn't work and the author lost interest in it in Dec 2008. It installs but when
it runs there is a hesitation for several seconds and nothing displays.
The other is Process Explorer procexp.exe which is part of Sysinternals.
I have the September 2009 version. The new version is April 2010. Since Mark Russinovich
is now owned (body, mind & soul) by Bill Gates, it now only works on XP or higher.
Oldversion.com does not have it either. I just searched Google and found some people
having different versions. Hint: The Sep'09 version is 3.385 MB.
If you do find it, here's how it works. I tested it by playing PeterGunn.mid with
Irfanview and minimizing it. I then tried to rename it to PeterGunnTheme.mid to
confirm a sharing violation.
I started procexp.exe and while it showed that Irfanview was open it did not
say what it locked.
I entered Ctrl+F and got a popup window. I entered "gunn" and it told me that Irfanview
was locking PeterGunn.mid.
After that you can press Del next to the process to kill it.
Okay, I found a source for the Jun'09 version:
Good luck.
