Curious about the existence of a work-around for file name gibberish

Apparently there is some difference between XP and W2K with regard to file names, that has never shown up before now, in the lifetime of XP. I wanted to examine a file in the game Mass Effect 2, which uses the Unreal 3 game engine. Its the Coalesced.Ini file, and I wasn't planning on altering it at this point (which seems to require extra steps beyond even a good hex editor's capabilities).

I was surprised as could be to see nothing resembling file names on any file or folder when I looked in the game's directory. So, since I still use W2K quite a lot, I thought I'd ask if there's an overlay or something I can add to Windows 2000 to interpret this new (to me, anyway) gibberish?
