Random BSODs & Trend ChipAwayVirus message

Elderly win2k machine has suddenly started frequent BSODs. Tonight I've had KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED,
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, and MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS. These happened
when I was using Opera, IE and just when the machine was sitting there doing nothing.
After the first BSOD, when I rebooted, I got the Trend ChipAwayVirus warning about
a boot sector virus. It asked me to boot from a clean floppy (!). The floppy drive
is defunct on this machine, so I booted from the win2k CD instead. It offered me
the option of installing win2k, repair a damaged setup or quitting the process. I
chose to quit, whereupon the machine booted up ok (though it did another BSOD after
a few minutes).
Now I find that if I leave the windows CD in the drive, the machine will boot (even
if I don't select to boot from the cd when it's starting up), but if I remove the
cd I get the Trend ChipAwayVirus warning.
I don't think the machine can really have a boot virus on it (unless you can get
them other than by booting from a floppy). One of the BSODs apparently is associated
with the Backdoor.NTHack virus, but I checked for the symptoms of that one (certain
processes running and a new hidden folder), and my computer doesn't have them.
Does this sound like a hardware problem of some sort? Memory? Overheating? The CPU
fan is a bit graunchy, but I took the side of the case and it is spinning OK (it's
been graunchy for a LONG time).
Any advice appreciated!
