What's your antivirus? Antispyware? Are they working too hard?
Do you have overlapping security?
Or has your security failed and your computer has become a zombie (bot).
Tho I don't think it's your problem I've found some really slow sites. The pages
had fully loaded (or almost so) and data was flowing, but it took a long time to
stop. One site produced a status bar message "Waiting for Digg.com". I don't care
about Digg and never will. (Well, if someone wanted to pay me, then I'd jump on
the bandwagon.) I used Adblock Plus, not to block an ad agency but so Digg would
not waste my time again.
I added Ghostery for no particular reason. It selectively blocks software that calls
back somewhere to gather marketing info. Most of these people have Privacy Policies
that they only use them for mass statistics. Then one of my favorite sites added
a new message warning me that, duh, something was going too slowly. This happened
on every page. Then I tried using Ghostery to block any companies' traces.
Things speeded up. In effect these programs -- all legitimate commercial products
-- are bots slowing your computer as hackers' trojans do.
